About
Dr Ameer Shehab is a dedicated and highly skilled Specialist General Practice and Psychotherapist with extensive experience across various aspects of healthcare. A Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, he has worked at multiple sites across Victoria, providing patient-centered care with a focus on holistic health and wellbeing. Dr Shehab’s career reflects a strong background in General Practice, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Aged Care, Obstetrics, and Mental Health. His diverse experience extends from his role as a COVID-19 doctor, where he triaged patients, coordinated testing, and managed follow-up care during the height of the pandemic, to his role as a Youth Health Doctor within headspace, providing physical and psychological care to at-risk young people.
An alum of the University of Melbourne, Dr Shehab completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) with a focus on rotations in General Medicine, Surgery, Women’s Health, Psychiatry, and Palliative Care. He has also pursued advanced training in psychological assessment and management through the Australian Psychological Society, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Institute, and University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Psychiatry Mindfulness Institute, and is a credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician through the Australia and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED). This further training now informs Dr Shehab’s clinical practice as he provides expert psychotherapy and psychological assessments directly to patients. Dr Shehab has also completed training as part of Impairment Assessment Victoria in order to provide Psychiatric Impairment Assessments to patients for transport, work-related, and legal proceedings.
This drive to continue giving back to the community has also led to Dr Shehab to complete further training in leadership and governance, earning certifications from prestigious institutions including the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Governance Institute of Australia, and now sits on the Board of Directors of the Australian Society of Psychological Medicine. In addition to his clinical practice and advocacy, Dr Shehab is committed to mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. He has been involved in mentoring programs through the University of Melbourne and the Dafydd Lewis Trust, guiding medical students, undergraduate scholars, and science students through their academic and career journeys. His leadership skills are further exemplified by his roles with the Australian Medical Association, where he chairs committees and actively contributes to the development of policies that support General Practitioners in caring for our communities.
Dr Shehab’s professional journey also includes notable volunteer work and leadership roles. He has served on the General Practice Policy Council of the Australian Medical Association Victoria and participated in the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria’s Director First Observership Program, which reflects his commitment to advancing healthcare services across the community.
In 2024 Dr Shehab was honoured to receive the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Victorian General Practitioner in Training of the Year Award, recognising his profound impact in improving access to mental health services for the most at-risk members of our communities, and his ongoing commitment to ensuring all Australians continue to be able to access excellent care for whatever the reason, whenever they need it.
